The horizontal expander represents another important step in the technological development of machines produced by CMS. It may be divided into semi automatic expanders (EP), available with up to 8 (*) expansion rods and automatic expanders (MOA) up to 12 (*) expansion rods. The horizontal expanders may expand coils up to 39.4ft/12m and may operate both in pulling and pushing mode of the expansion rods.
(*) these values may change based on tubes pitch, tubes thickness, type of material used and nominal length of the horizontal expander.
While the semi automatic version EP is an economic and flexible way to expand small series of coils, with the automatic version MOA CMS proposes the most effective solution to the automatic expansion of small and medium series of coils, with very reduced set-up and execution time. Upon request and for the version MOA in traction only, the addition of a flaring unit allows to perform in automatic the bowls on the terminal part of the tubes on the rods entrance side, preparing them for the circuit completion.
CMS also proposes a special version of horizontal expander (MOCN) whose characteristic is to expand for traction up to 80 rods simultaneously, expanding in a single stroke a whole coil. On request it’s possible to add a tubes flaring unit that in the automatic cycle, after the tubes expansions, performs the bell or the flare of the tubes. It is very suitable for coils of a medium-big series, with size (tubes and rows within a certain number) and length up to 4m. The typical applications of this expander are the gravity coils and the commercial air coolers.
Even though they are externally similar, the models EP and MOA show substantial differences mainly connected to the type of numeric control applied and, as a consequence, to the type of functionality allowed that may be summarized as follows:
1. MOA
- total interface of the horizontal expander with the expansion bench(es) supplied by CMS;
- automatic control and execution of the expansion according to the expansion sequences of the tubes that are completely programmable;
- detection and exclusion of the expansion and lubrication if 1 or more tubes are re-passed;
- verification of the back-stop plate and control of the collisions with CMS benches (upon request);
- possibility to store up to 1000 programs
- flaring or heading of the tubes (upon request)
2. EP
- bench(es) not interfaced
- semiautomatic execution of the expansion (zero point and expansion sequence)
- manual management of back-stop plate and collisions
- rods lubrication by manual exclusion
Flaring unit (upon request)

MOA horizontal expander, in the traction version only, may mount a flaring unit that in the automatic cycle, after the tubes expansions, performs the bell or the flare of the tubes
Expansion bench (upon request)

During the expansion, the coils must be put on suitable benches. The productive arrangement suggested, foresees the use of two benches that increase the productivity and reduce dead times.
Safety
The horizontal expanders are supplied with perimeter light curtains and by laser guard sensors in the operating zone. |
